Discover Bokor Hill Station – a “ghost town” in Kampot

Once dubbed the “ghost town” of Cambodia, Bokor Hill gives visitors the impression of a desolate beauty with the old French buildings and the ruins hidden in the fog. Nowadays, however, this destination has revived and become a famous tourist attraction that attracts many travelers coming to visit and explore its beauty.

Bokor Plateau

Bokor Plateau is located in Preah Monivong National Park; from Kampot, you have to go through about 32km mountain pass to reach the hill’s top. Situated at an altitude of 1,075 meters above sea level, the weather at Bokor Plateau is cool all year round. From the top of the hill, tourists can see the panoramic view of the Gulf of Thailand and Phu Quoc Island of Vietnam. During the rule, French colonists built an entertainment area and hotel on the hill to meet the needs of relaxation. However, after that, the Bokor Plateau was gradually abandoned and forgotten; from a place described as a paradise, it is called “ghost town” of Cambodia.

After nearly half of a century, the Bokor Plateau was revived in 1993 when Bokor National Park was established. There are many resorts, restaurants, casinos built in here of which the most prominent one is Thansur Bokor Highland Resort. This is a 5-star resort which offers high quality services for visitors such as swimming pool, restaurants, casino, karaoke rooms, bar and entertainment area for children.

Bokor Hill Station: Bokor also has many attractions, beautiful shooting locations that travelers should not miss. The first one is the old station located on the majestic hill like an abandoned palatial palace. Ut took many months and deaths to complete the station. Today, this destination attracts tourists especially people who love adventure and strong feelings because of the “scary” atmosphere in here.

Wat Sampov Pram (also known as “5 boats temple”): was built in 1924 by King Monivong. The tempke is not very large but has stunning views with large shaped boat rocks and much unique architecture that associated with the mysterious legend of the love story of the prince Preah Thong and Nagani aqua princess. From the Wat Sampov Pram, visitors can see the old casino and the deserted hotel built by the French colonists in the early 20th century hidden in the mist. This place is situated forward the sea that make a perfect combination of nature and spirituality. Behind the temple is breathtaking view of sapphire sea. On the top, you can get great view and atmosphere; it is also an ideal site for meditating in Cambodia.

Popokvil Waterfall: Another place to visit in here is Popokvil Waterfall. The best time to visit the waterfall is from May to October (in rainy season). It is a two tiers waterfall with its first tier is around 15-metre high while the second one is about 18-metre high. Popokvil Waterfall is not only a great place for a swim on a sweltering day but also a very best place to take pictures.

Statue of Ya Mao (Mother Mao): According to Khmer legend, Ya Mao is the guardian deity of the Southern Coast. People worship Ya Mao as a saint who represents charity and brings happiness to Cambodian people. The statue of ya Mao was built on Bokor hillside and completed in 2010 with 29-metre high in meditation posture towards the sea.

Bokor Hill features its own beauty that only coming here, visitors can feel. It is an ideal destination for tourists to visit in Cambodia.
